You find inspiration in the most amazing places. Sometimes as you are driving your car, other times, when taking a walk in the park.
I found inspiration one Saturday night as I watched the “World’s Greatest Ads” on TV (I think that was the name of the program).
Yes, not looking for inspiration of any kind when an advertisement was shown that I believe was so powerful and so true that I put it into my memory banks for future reference. It went something like this…
The initial scene was that of a young boy playing the piano (somewhat clumsily) and when asked his name and what he would be when he grew up he replied my name is Billy Joel and I’m going to be a famous piano player and singer.
The next scene was again of a young boy playing the piano (also somewhat clumsily). The same question was asked of this boy. His reply was, “My name is Elton John and when I grow up I’m going to be a famous piano player and songwriter.
The third scene was again of a young boy playing the piano with such passion and skill that it captured my imagination and I waited to hear the reply to that same question, “What will you be when you grow up”? His reply was, my name is such and such (I can’t remember it) and when I grow up I’m going to be a Plumber just like my dad!
Moral of the story: You achieve what you set out to achieve.
Each boy had a goal and guess what… they achieved it. I know this is a simple illustration but it’s often the simple ones that usually have the greatest impact.
A little while ago I wrote about BE, DO, HAVE, as I did about Goal Setting. Let’s take a moment and pull it all together.
Here’s an exercise to help you out…
Rule up a page into three columns. Head the left hand column “Goal”, head the middle column “What Do I Have To Do To Achieve the Goal” and head the right hand column “Who Do I Have To Be To Get There.” When you’re setting goals for real growth really work hard on the BE part.
This is where you work on identifying the type of person you need to become to achieve the goal. Do this and you will be well on your way to achieving your goal. It’s challenging the first couple of times, but as with most things it gets easier the more you do it. Remember in order to HAVE, you must first BE the person and then DO the things you need to inorder to achive the end result. You can’t just “Have” without the effort.
