My wife, Lynn, has recently changed positions at Mary Baldwin College, and she has found the new job both rewarding and challenging. The events of this week were shaping up to be especially challenging, so I was not surprised when as she was walking out of the door this morning, she asked me to give her a few words of encouragement. I came up with, “Persist. Stay the course.” and a few other things that sounded vaguely coach like.
Overhearing our conversation, our 12 year old son, Matthew, in his inimitable way, simply turned to his mother and said, “Mom, have an amazing day. Be amazing.” Wow! What a coach.
What does an amazing day look like? What would have to happen today to make it amazing? What would you be doing? Who would you be doing it with? Could you just be or would you have to actually be doing something? Could you have an amazing day in your business or your workplace? Or is the only way for you to have an amazing day to be away from work? In his book “The Referral of a Lifetime”, Tim Templeton suggests that a great question to ask someone you have just met is, “If you could start over, knowing what you now know, what would your day look like?” How would you answer that question? Would your day be amazing?
So, how can you have an amazing day? First, you must know what you personally want out of life. What are your long term dreams and goals? Second, you have to plan on having an amazing day. Everyday, you must believe that you deserve an amazing day and that it is possible. Third, you have to show up. Have a long term plan, but live in the present. Enjoy each and every moment. Lastly, you must participate. Give 100% to all that you do. The more you give, the more you will get. So what are you going to do on this amazing day?
Here are several ideas for things that might be part of an amazing day:
