Networking is such an integral part of what we do daily such that many of us do not realise that we are networking until someone point out the word to us. Webster describes a Network as "a group of people who co-operate with each other." Networking as we know it can be an informal affair amongst friends and families, such as a wedding dinner, or a formal affair such as a business chamber of commerce meeting. A successful networker, i.e. one who achieves both business as well as personal success, does not achieve their success on their own; instead, they surround themselves with a successful network of well developed contacts and support.
Want to know the secret why some people are better at networking compared to others? Here are sure-fire tips on successful networking:
Yes - a networking function must be approached as work, not an event to load up on drinks and food. By all means, have that snack if you must, but you must also meet people, introduce yourselves and get to know others that you have not yet met. Renew acquaintances but first and foremost, make new ones.
Take along your most positive energy to a networking function. Greet strangers as though they are your long lost friend and the ice will immediately melt. Ask questions and listen to answers with intent to help without expecting anything in return. Share information, knowledge or opinion and create information abundance.
- Apply the PDCA approach W.E.
Deming, the quality management guru, proposed the Plan-Do-Check-Act or PDCA cycle as a process for continuous improvement. The PDCA process can be adopted as the methodology to approaching a networking event as illustrated below.
GOOD LUCK and TAKE ACTION.
