I first met Emerson at a seminar organised by our corporate financiers. Whilst I initially felt that we probably didn't need to invest in any long-term personal coaching or training, the assessment questions that we were asked to fill in honestly, as to our working procedures and practices, gave me the first indication that whilst we were good, we could become better. Emerson then visited our offices to give a trial coaching session to explain how the Action Coach system worked and I felt that as the company was in a period of change and development it made sense to bring Emerson on board as a coach to help dissect the business and see what we were doing well, what could be improved and the blindingly obvious things that we were doing wrong but chose to ignore.
I personally have found working with Emerson very productive and one of the key benefits we have gained is by Emerson helping to systemise what is a technical and service business, without losing sight of sales. We are now enjoying successful feedback with our e-marketing and general marketing strategies that we have implemented through Emerson. My staff, although initially reluctant to change, now enjoy taking more responsibility and planning their work tasks, which leaves more time for me to work on the business rather than in it. We started our business in 2006 and achieved year-on-year growth from £4m to £11M turnover despite the economic downturn. However the continued growth of the business meant that our systems and processes which were suitable when we started up had since become outdated and unfit for purpose. In order to continue sustaining the growth of our business, we turned to Emerson Patton, our ActionCoach Business Coach in October 2010.
Within two weeks of our initial meeting, Emerson helped us to go right back to basics by supporting us with the redesign of our workflow. The resulting systems and processes meant we could cope with the demands we now place upon them, and are robust and flexible enough to evolve as our business continues to grow. They also give us huge opportunities to leverage the business and employ up-selling and cross-selling techniques. This has positioned us well for further growth with minimal pain.

The first coaching sessions put my business & skills into a new perspective. I have run a Day Nursery since 1989 & generally not done too badly. Training schemes, An electronic diary system which has given great results with our “Time mastery” by improving what we do and when we do it. At the Action 90-day planning workshop we went through lots of questions about our internal processes and, although we didn’t look specifically at proposals, it got me thinking about how I could apply a much tighter process and format to my proposals. It was good to have a whole day away from the office at the workshop to start the ball rolling on this. Every proposal I produce is different because most of my work is bespoke. Producing a proposal was taking an hour or more in some cases, and was a real pain. Preparing just 3 new quotes could take me half a day(!) and so I used to dread people asking me to quote.
