Is running your business harder work than you ever thought it would be?

I know from first hand experience the many pitfalls for we business owners!  Are you:
  •                 working longer hours than you want to or ever thought you would be?
  •                 paying yourself less than you pay your staff?
  •                 struggling to recruit and retain a motivated team?
  •                 wishing you could rekindle the passion and vision that led you to forming your own business in the first place?
Well, I can assure you, you are not alone! But with the right business mentor to give you support and guidance, you can get your business working for you and start to make your dreams come true.
As a small business owner myself, I know what it is like to worry about the day-to-day survival of the business. As a Business Coach, I am here to help you make your business THRIVE, not just SURVIVE.  We will work together to define your dreams and vision, and then we will put into place the necessary systems, strategies and tactics that will allow you to turn your business venture into a more dynamic and successful one. And we might also have some FUN along the way!
At Action, we define a successful business as: a commercial, profitable enterprise that works without you. Eventually, you will be working less and making more money – does that sound good to you? As your Business Coach, I will function as an unreasonable friend who tells it like it is and keeps you working on the path toward your dreams.

Why am I so passionate about helping local businesses?
For me, it’s very personal. Both of my parents left successful careers to run their own businesses, with the goal of taking control of their destiny and reaping the rewards of their own hard work.  Over 10 years, they managed to build up profitable businesses but, as a child, I witnessed many of the less appealing sides to running your own business such as bad moods due to high levels of stress, long working hours, no holidays and finally, my father’s early retirement due to ill-health and the businesses being sold for a pittance. I really think that if there had been someone like me to help my mother and father with their businesses, they would have been much more fulfilled and successful.
When it came to my career path, I followed in my father's footsteps and trained as a Chartered Accountant in Dover. Once qualified, I moved to Southampton where I continued building my knowledge of how small and medium sized businesses should (and should not) be run.  At the age of 28, I was offered a partnership in an accountancy practice but turned it down as I felt the opportunity had come too early in my career and I wanted to get more involved in the day-to-day management of a commercial business.  I therefore accepted a job as Finance Director (FD) of one of my larger, more progressive clients.
I spent 4 successful years in this role where, amongst other things, I learnt the importance of good leadership, timely and accurate management information, sound financial controls and teamwork, and I was lucky to have some great business mentors during that time.  This position led me to work with a large Dutch group, who were acquiring and setting up companies in the UK.  During this time, I was a key part of the team that built up two multi-million pound operations, each with over 400 members of staff.
After a further 4 years, these companies became large enough to require their own full time FD's.  Not wanting to be tied down to one business, I decided to extend my theoretical business knowledge and took the major step to go back to University and study for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA).  I completed this, with distinction, in 1 year, and then my quest for even greater business knowledge led me to ActionCOACH.

Now, as a result of ActionCOACH's intensive training, my recent qualification as an NLP Practitioner and with my 20+ years of working in and with small companies, I feel that I am in the perfect position to pass on this wealth of knowledge and experience to other individuals. My aim is to ensure that the business owners that I coach avoid the pitfalls my own mother and father experienced when they ran their businesses.
My goal is: "To provide every business owner/manager with the tools, knowledge and confidence to maximise the potential of both themselves and their business”.
What I do to have fun!
Away from work, I am a reasonable tennis player, and I captain the Hampshire Tennis Club men's 'A' team.  I have also set myself the goal of reducing my golf handicap from 24 to 18.
I have been happily married to Jane for 17 years. We have no children but our two cats, two horses and two motorcycles keep us busy enough!
