There's a well-known story about two shoe salesmen who travelled out to Africa many years ago to discover the opportunities for their products. The first guy called back, "No opportunity here, no one wears shoes." The second took a different view, "This is great, it's a huge market; everybody needs shoes!"

So which guy would you employ? What would your company do? With that story in mind, it's easy to draw comparisons with the recession. Does your company see this as a time of difficulty ... or opportunity? Are you accepting the state of the market or embracing it? An excuse or an opportunity?

The recession brings choice. You have two, possibly three options. The first, do nothing. The second is common, batten down the hatches and sit it out - the likely choice of the 'bean counter'. The third approach is less common, 'get a surfboard and catch your biggest wave to date'. Just think about it. If everyone else is sitting out, what an opportunity for you! So does it work? The fact is that a recent Harvard report shows that companies that plan for and take a proactive approach will emerge stronger.

So you're taken by the idea of riding the waves. Now how do you go about it? Many business owners want to take the opportunity, and discover that there's more to surfing than meets the eye. Yet the teenager makes it look so easy - he's as cool as a cucumber and handles his board like he was born that way. The solution is to find someone to show you the way. It's the same in business.
