But it wasn't always that way. When I started out in business back in 1990 I didn't have a clue about identifying targets markets, building effective marketing campaigns, making powerful offers, consistently communicating with my prospects or ANY of that. I also thought selling was just a matter of chatting and 'being helpful and nice' and they'd buy from me...wrong! Oh, and there's the other idea I had back then, I call it my 'FIELD OF DREAMS' philosophy which I'm sure you're familiar with, you know the one, "If I build it they will come"....yea right, that worked...NOT!
And of course, I thought I knew everything about finances too....hey my dad was an accountant, so that stuff's easy right....wrong!
Well, back then I was naive but enthusiastic AND A CONTROL FREAK. I thought I could do it all and figure it all out by myself...and I guess to a certain extent I did eventually, but boy was it expensive and hard work. The time I took to get it right, the cost of education (I went back to University at age 42 and got my MBA), the non-recoverable lost time with my family!! I spent way too much time learning it all and WOW what a lot of wasted opportunity while I did it. I know I can't get back any of that time or money now BUT I also know that if I had the choice you have now, I'd rather FAST TRACK my success by drawing on the knowledge and experience of someone who's already there. Hey, THAT's ME I guess. I wish business coaches were around 15 years ago.
One important ATTITUDE I developed through all that learning and hard work was an ABSOLUTE passion for business, and an utmost respect and admiration for ALL those small business owners who put their HARD EARNED DOLLARS on the line each and every day.
