• We developed a hiring procedure. We now feel comfident in moving forward, even though our success rate stinks!! At least, we have a systematic way of weeding out the bad apples and confidence that our company is an excellent employment opportunity. We don't have to settle for less than the best.

After three years of owning a small landscape company, my partner and I were at a crossroads. We realized that we were fighting the same problems with labor, sales, and job site execution as we were the very first year in the business. Additionally, when we took the time to sit down and figure out how many hours we were working in the business, we found that after three years, our hours had increased!
The reason we started the business was to be in control of our income and our schedule. We found we had no control over either, and in fact, the business dictated both. Owning your own business is extremely difficult. We knew how to landscape, supervise, purchase, and sell. However, we did not have a successful business. Our balance sheet was in good shape, but our profit and loss statement told the true story. Our business model was a reaction to losses. The losses created stress, and anxiety, which led to longer hours, unrealistic exercises in cost cutting, and desperation sales. The business was running us, and because we had sunk our life savings into the business, we felt compelled to hang on for as long as we could. We realized that if we didn't get some help, the end was eminent.
We began to work on what we were doing wrong. Very quickly, we found it difficult to even identify what was causing us to lose money. We continued on our own for a few more months, and while we cleaned up some of the excess spending, the business was still in trouble. Someone suggested we visit a business coach for an evaluation. Our response was, the last thing we need is to spend more money on this failing business. However, we also knew that there really were not many people who could analyze our business and help us find solutions. We decided to give it a try.
Action International began by doing an analysis of our business. Based on the analysis Phil Barton was able to pinpoint several key areas that needed immediate attention. My partner and I were hesitant to try the new strategies and implement new procedures, but we followed the recommendations and slowly the business began to evolve. Within a year of our first meeting, the business had become profitable and we had begun to expand into new markets.
Having access to someone who is genuinely interested in the success of your business, but is not part of day-to-day operation, is true value of having a business coach. Phil Barton was able to provide an outside perspective that challenged us to become a better company. Additionally, the help he provided in the way of marketing tools, sales process, and a model that allowed us to create a franchise, was really the key to our success.
