We have been working with Steve Thalls as our business coach for nearly a year. As owners of a retail sewing machine, sewing supply, and fabric store for over 26 years, we are not inexperienced. However during the past year, we have learned much about working on our business (we were already working very hard in our business). We have been motivated to set goals and monitor our progress toward those goals, and we have learned a variety of techniques for keeping a close watch on our financial numbers. In addition, we’ve become more knowledgeable about interacting with our staff and about creating and using advertising. We have been showing a 17-20% increase in our gross sales over the same time in 2006. Expenses have been similar and cost of goods is up only slightly, so we are very pleased with the increase on the bottom line of our profit and loss statement. We have felt that our relationship with Steve and ActionCOACH has been very beneficial for us.

Steve just wanted to email you and let you know my sales call with a Top 20 Client today went very well. Using some of the ideas we have discussed, such as setting goals, asking the right questions, and concentrating on the needs and relationship was very effective.
Goals were,
Learn about new contacts; (accomplished), understand current supplier for hose we were supplying and assess the possibility of coming back in with that product if we can become competitive; (affirmative!), discuss new products and get an opportunity from the customer to quote on the product, with a strong opportunity to close a sale; (affirmative ¼” fuel emission barrier hose, and clamps.)
Organizing the calls along these lines is very effective.

After reading the Cashflow book from cover to cover this weekend, I have a better understanding of the difference of what I have been doing and what you are suggesting. I always try to slip in more information than just the price when I am talking to someone, but if I asked the question the way you said and got a better feel for what they truly needed I could respond to their needs. I will try it. The book gave us lots of ideas and I am hard at work putting together tally sheets and better inquiry information sheets so that we get all we need to know.
