I have been working with small and medium businesses for 20 years as a sales and marketing consultant.  I am often asked to move more into the business coach type role when working with clients, as a marketing plan is always tied into available budget and operational issues.

In 2007 I was getting so may requests for this type of work I thought it would be better to find a person or organization that specializes in the entire business process to help these clients. The fact that I don't really love the operational and financial side of business also was a strong driver to find the right company to help. It's not that I didn't have some experience in each area, I had grown the sales division of a company I was a partner in, from 1 million to 80 million dollars in annual revenue, and started 6 different companies, but even with all that experience, I still wasn't a good business coach for my clients. A business coach needs to be a full time business coach, and constantly learning and growing and most of all must love what they do. They also need the people skills to relate to many different personalities in different situations.

I began my search and rapidly discovered that many coaches are both personal and business coaches which seem to be very different skill sets.  Others seem to lack any real business experience;  being a corporate executive for 20 years isn't much of a resume for coaching small businesses without additional training on the issues that effect a small company. I was also amazed at the lack of training many had in the area of coaching. Frankly, it was alarming who was calling themselves a coach!

Then I found the ActionCoach organization. It seemed to have all the qualities I was looking for in a company I could refer with confidence to my clients. I take referrals very seriously, as my reputation is on the line through that "endorsement".  Over the period of a month I spent time meeting and speaking to local Action Coach franchise owners to determine if what I had researched was true, and to my pleasant surprise I was impressed.  I was invited to attend several of their training seminars, and did so as a courtesy to them, and also to see what my clients would experience. I admit, that I felt there was little I would personally gain from attending a business workshop for small business owners. After all, I had run a 80 million dollar company, and more importantly grown it from almost nothing, to that level, as well as having owned three coffee and bagel restaurants, and 4 other businesses.

I was so wrong.  The first 90 minute seminar was one I truly wish I had been through when I was 22 years old . I would have skipped so many hard lessons in building businesses for the 23 years.  After that experience I began referring any clients who were asking for business coaching to several local Action Coaches.  I was so impressed with their service I actually paid half of the fee's for them to attend the 2 day workshops, knowing that it would change their business for the better, and that would in turn allow us to work together on a larger scale.

After 4 years of sending my clients to ActionCoach I am as thrilled today as I was then. They have done an excellent job and my clients have seen great success in their businesses since working with an ActionCoach.  In the Denver Area,  I refer my Clients to Susan Roberts, who is in my opinion one of the best business coaches in the Country.
